{"id":4164,"date":"2018-02-13T17:28:38","date_gmt":"2018-02-13T17:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/?p=4164"},"modified":"2018-02-13T18:34:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T18:34:35","slug":"cometry-to-improve-our-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/2018\/02\/13\/cometry-to-improve-our-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Cometry to Improve Our Society?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/cometry_white_font-black_bck.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4165 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/cometry_white_font-black_bck-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/cometry_white_font-black_bck-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/cometry_white_font-black_bck-390x261.jpg 390w, https:\/\/theopinator.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/cometry_white_font-black_bck.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>By Aishani Chauhan \u201820<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Cometry to Improve Our Society?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comedy and poetry. \u00a0Put them together, and you get Cometry: a group whose mission statement is to blend performance poetry and stand up comedy into entertainment that highlights the similarities, habits, and traits, that people all share, but often go unnoticed. \u00a0Every Cometry piece or \u201ccoem\u201d is designed to tell a story, raise awareness, or deliver an inspirational message, all while making making one laugh. \u00a0On January 26, 2018, Iggy Mwela and Claudia Martinez of Cometry performed at the Kirby Center for the Creative Arts in front of students and faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cometry introduced the concept of being \u201cGRAV\u201d or a leader that people always want to be around. \u00a0To demonstrate a key part of the \u201cGRAV\u201d\u2015vulnerability\u2015 Ms. Martinez put on a hat and drew a mustache on her face in order to look like her uncle, and shared stories of her experiences as a child growing in up in a Mexican household and her struggle with coming out as a teen. \u00a0Iggy Mwela performed an original poem revealing his abusive childhood growing up with an alcoholic parent in an unsafe neighborhood. \u00a0At the core of this performance was a message to embrace one\u2019s weaknesses, and turn them into strengths. \u00a0\u201cI was very pleasantly surprised by the impact it left me with. \u00a0The show was not only very funny and entertaining, but it also sounded like a very important message.\u201d says Leanna Yatcilla \u201820 of their performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a few students thought that the performance was disorganized and that the message was lost within the comedy; \u201cWhile Cometry\u2019s aim was to deliver an inspiring message, the disorganization and long length of the performance led to the message becoming lost in the comedy,\u201d said Sophie Guichardan \u201819. Whatever Cometry presented to its audience, it did not fail to emphasize the question, \u201cHow can I become a better leader by embracing both my similarities and differences?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Aishani Chauhan \u201820 Cometry to Improve Our Society?
